Lower Earl Grey Trail Reconstruction – 2017

In 2007, a fire swept through the lower part of the trail. This created conditions ripe for small landslides that made the trail progressively less and less safe. In 2015, an assessment was done by BC Parks that identified areas where the trail would need to be reconstructed or moved due to slumping and slope instability. In 2017, a partnership between the Friends of West Kootenay Parks and the Kaslo and District Community Forest Society was formed to undertake rehabilitation of the trail from the trailhead to the second cable car. The Friends raised funds to help pay for the cost of relocating a section of trail above the Clint Creek Bridge and the KDCFS got a grant to hire students and a supervisor to reconstruct the trail where slumping had occurred. The work was completed by the fall of 2017. Thanks to the Community Initiatives and Affected Areas Program of the Regional District of Central Kootenay and the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program for their financial support.
